A Morning at Bako National Park: Chasing Rocks, Waves and Sea Breeze

A Morning at Bako National Park: Chasing Rocks, Waves and Sea Breeze

When we planned our family trip to Kuching in 2023, the mission was very clear. My daughters had been complaining that Sarawak was the only state they had not visited. So I put Bako National Park straight into the itinerary. This was our chance to finally see the famous coastal rock formations, especially the sea stack that looked like a cobra head. At that time, it still stood proudly by the shore. None of us knew that a few months later, on 13 February 2024, it would collapse because of strong weather and natural erosion.

Thinking back now, I feel grateful that we saw it before it disappeared forever.

Starting the Day: Subuh Breeze, Sunshine and Two Boats Racing the Waves

We started early that morning, right after Subuh. The sky was calm, still soft with the colours of dawn. Papa drove us to the jetty in his usual steady style, pretending he was not excited even though I knew he loved this kind of outdoor adventure.

At the jetty, we arranged everything we needed for the trip.

We bought a package with two speedboats and our entry permits for the national park.

From there, the adventure began.

The moment the boats pulled away from the jetty, my daughters were in pure excitement. The salty air, the sound of the engine, and the gentle sway of the boat turned them into little explorers. The morning sun slowly warmed our faces, and the sea breeze hit us in the best possible way.

Then something funny and unexpected happened.

The two boatmen began to race each other.

The girls screamed and laughed, their voices mixing with the splash of the waves. Water sprayed onto our faces, sparkling under the sunlight. It felt like a simple kind of joy that stays in your heart for years. Just us, the open sea, and the feeling of being completely alive.

The Sea Stack: Standing Before the Wonders of Creation

When the boat finally slowed near the famous sea stack, all of us fell quiet.

There it was, rising from the sea like a sculpture shaped by time itself. The formation known as the cobra head stood tall, formed from sandstone and carved slowly by waves, wind and rain over millions of years.

We took our photos, of course.

I gave my usual instructions.

Papa stood there pretending to be patient.

My youngest asked endless questions about how rocks change shape.

And my eldest posed confidently, capturing memories she will look back on one day.

Looking at the sea stack, I felt humbled. Nature is far greater than us, yet we were blessed with a moment to stand there, enjoy it and feel its magnificence together as a family.

A Simple Look at Bako’s Geology

Bako National Park is not large, but it is full of natural wonders shaped by ancient processes.

Here are a few simple facts:

🪨 Sandstone Formations

The cliffs and rocks are made of layered sandstone that formed about fifteen to twenty million years ago. Over time, weather conditions carved these layers into patterns and curves that look like natural art.

🌊 Sea Arches and Coastal Features

The combination of waves and softer rock layers creates arches, notches and small hidden coves along the coastline.

🎨 Beautiful Rock Patterns

Some rocks display natural lines and bands caused by minerals such as iron oxide. These patterns give the rocks their unique colours and textures.

Every formation tells a story of time, pressure and change.

This visit to Bako taught me a few things that stayed in my heart.

✨ Natural beauty does not last forever.

What we admire today may not be there tomorrow. The collapse of the cobra head rock reminded me to appreciate every moment while it is still in front of us.

✨ Family memories do not require anything fancy.

A simple boat ride, a splash of seawater and the sound of our children laughing were more meaningful than any expensive holiday.

✨ Being present is the most valuable gift.

The morning sun, the sea breeze and the joy on my daughters faces were the real treasures of that day.

✨ Nature keeps us humble.

Standing in front of ancient rocks reminds us that everything in life changes with time. Yet there is beauty in every stage of that journey.

Cuti-cuti di Tanjung Leman

Cuti hari buruh, selepas sebulan bertugas semula. Perjalanan bermula dari Klang, punya la beriya nak bertolak pukul 7am lastly pukul 8.30 am gak baru boleh gerak. Almaklumla nak bergerak anak ramai ni banyak kerenah anak-anak kena layan dulu.

Adik first time pergi tandas plus ni dia begitu impressed sebab cantik, besih dan lantai kering. Adik ingat lagi masa kami sampai di Arrival KLIA bahagian international, masya Allah tandas di tempat ambil bag tu sekotor-kotornya dengan bau busuk, tisu berterabur sana-sini, lantai basah lencun lagi Malu weh kat pelancong asing yang first time jejeak kaki ke Malaysia ni. Tandas di KLIA tu walaupun tempat melepaskan hajat kena la di jaga bersih sebab apa guna bina airport world class kalau tandas third kelas.Ok enough isu tandas, tapi memang puji tandas plus. thumb up!

Selepas habis makan, kami terus ke kluang, kena masuk country road 50 menghala ke mersing pulak.

Bagus homestay ni besar muat semua ahli keluarga. Nak makan pun banyak kat sekitar area Felda Tenngaroh, kedai makan ada di mana-mana.

The next day, papa bawak family gi bersantai kat Pantai Tanjung Leman. Terengganu pantai pasir silika. Pasir pantai tanjung leman ni ada bercampur pasir hitam tapi takde la sehitam pasir pantai batu hitam beserah atau pantai balok. Anyway, pantai sini sememang nya cantik dan landai, nak mandi sampai ke tengah pun masih body tak tenggelam. Cuma kekurangan pantai ni ada banyak jelly fish. Nanti kena jarijemari jelly fish tu adoii sakitnya.

Anak-anak first sampai je nak beli mainan. nampak aje orang jual mainan so yaya dapat bubble and nina dapat topi. macam biasa la mama papa punya rules bila gi mana-mana pun, semua anak-anak boleh beli dua barang sahaja, satu food and 1 bukan food.

Eya punya la happy sebab dapat makan goreng pisang cheese, dah lama dah dia cakap dia tak makan. komen mama papa tooooo sweetttt...sebab banyak condense milk kot.

Lepas dah habis makan-makan dan shopping-shopping, mama dan anak-anak berjalan-jalan di gigi air. Yaya dan Nina sibuk nak celup kaki dalam air tapi bila nampak anak-anak ketam berlari sana-sini atas pasir terus takut. Then bila sampai ke tepi air takut lagi bila nampak jelly fish. Bila mama tengok formasi batuan ni terus teringat pantai batu hitam beserah Pahang.
