A Morning at Bako National Park: Chasing Rocks, Waves and Sea Breeze

A Morning at Bako National Park: Chasing Rocks, Waves and Sea Breeze

When we planned our family trip to Kuching in 2023, the mission was very clear. My daughters had been complaining that Sarawak was the only state they had not visited. So I put Bako National Park straight into the itinerary. This was our chance to finally see the famous coastal rock formations, especially the sea stack that looked like a cobra head. At that time, it still stood proudly by the shore. None of us knew that a few months later, on 13 February 2024, it would collapse because of strong weather and natural erosion.

Thinking back now, I feel grateful that we saw it before it disappeared forever.

Starting the Day: Subuh Breeze, Sunshine and Two Boats Racing the Waves

We started early that morning, right after Subuh. The sky was calm, still soft with the colours of dawn. Papa drove us to the jetty in his usual steady style, pretending he was not excited even though I knew he loved this kind of outdoor adventure.

At the jetty, we arranged everything we needed for the trip.

We bought a package with two speedboats and our entry permits for the national park.

From there, the adventure began.

The moment the boats pulled away from the jetty, my daughters were in pure excitement. The salty air, the sound of the engine, and the gentle sway of the boat turned them into little explorers. The morning sun slowly warmed our faces, and the sea breeze hit us in the best possible way.

Then something funny and unexpected happened.

The two boatmen began to race each other.

The girls screamed and laughed, their voices mixing with the splash of the waves. Water sprayed onto our faces, sparkling under the sunlight. It felt like a simple kind of joy that stays in your heart for years. Just us, the open sea, and the feeling of being completely alive.

The Sea Stack: Standing Before the Wonders of Creation

When the boat finally slowed near the famous sea stack, all of us fell quiet.

There it was, rising from the sea like a sculpture shaped by time itself. The formation known as the cobra head stood tall, formed from sandstone and carved slowly by waves, wind and rain over millions of years.

We took our photos, of course.

I gave my usual instructions.

Papa stood there pretending to be patient.

My youngest asked endless questions about how rocks change shape.

And my eldest posed confidently, capturing memories she will look back on one day.

Looking at the sea stack, I felt humbled. Nature is far greater than us, yet we were blessed with a moment to stand there, enjoy it and feel its magnificence together as a family.

A Simple Look at Bako’s Geology

Bako National Park is not large, but it is full of natural wonders shaped by ancient processes.

Here are a few simple facts:

🪨 Sandstone Formations

The cliffs and rocks are made of layered sandstone that formed about fifteen to twenty million years ago. Over time, weather conditions carved these layers into patterns and curves that look like natural art.

🌊 Sea Arches and Coastal Features

The combination of waves and softer rock layers creates arches, notches and small hidden coves along the coastline.

🎨 Beautiful Rock Patterns

Some rocks display natural lines and bands caused by minerals such as iron oxide. These patterns give the rocks their unique colours and textures.

Every formation tells a story of time, pressure and change.

This visit to Bako taught me a few things that stayed in my heart.

✨ Natural beauty does not last forever.

What we admire today may not be there tomorrow. The collapse of the cobra head rock reminded me to appreciate every moment while it is still in front of us.

✨ Family memories do not require anything fancy.

A simple boat ride, a splash of seawater and the sound of our children laughing were more meaningful than any expensive holiday.

✨ Being present is the most valuable gift.

The morning sun, the sea breeze and the joy on my daughters faces were the real treasures of that day.

✨ Nature keeps us humble.

Standing in front of ancient rocks reminds us that everything in life changes with time. Yet there is beauty in every stage of that journey.
